Ethical Theory (Philosophy) Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
Ethical Theory (Philosophy) - Essay Example Unfortunately, despite of the huge popularity of ethics in academia, it has been an observation that individuals informally and even organizations formally have ignored the importance of ethics and its implementation in different procedures intentionally and/or unintentionally, which has resulted in rising of various ethical dilemmas globally. This paper is an attempt to contribute towards the similar debate regarding the role of ethics in understanding and resolving ethical dilemmas in our society. Particularly, focus of the paper will be on ethical dilemma in the business world while an ethical theory Utilitarianism will be under utilization for analysis purpose. In the corporate world, majority or almost every decision involves the factor of profitization, and for this purpose, business organizations develop their own code of ethics to suit their decisions and justifications. As the result, one can observe a conflict of ethical standards when it comes to comparing different organi zations that are resulting in creation of global issues that are directly or indirectly affecting millions of people around the world. Experts believe that ââ¬Å"business ethics is a set of principles and ideologies that offer understanding and methodology to earn fair income in the business organizationsâ⬠(Crane, 2007, pp. 23-28). Unfortunately, analysis has indicated that there has been a similar understanding in majority of organizations; however, it has remained limited to the level of understanding only rather than implementation (Furrow, 2005). Ethical Dilemma In every business organization, accountancy is one of the major aspects that play a significant role in determining its success or failure. Due to such significance, accountancy includes dealing with sensitive information that results in a very big responsibility on accountants, which at the same time, opens doors for unethical acts and fraudulent behaviors (Kotler & Lee, 2005). Unfortunately, literature has ident ified a number of instances in which accountants and particularly, organizations failed to abide by the ethical code of conduct resulting in heavy prices (Beenen & Pinto, 2009), and the case of Enron Corporation is a very famous example of ethical dilemma in business field. This case resulted in a new debate that now focuses on white-collar crimes and possibility of organizational corruption due to presence of loopholes in organizational setup that then lead to unethical activities globally. The paper will analyze this ethical dilemma in light of non-religious ethical theory of Utilitarianism; however, from analysis of other literature, work pressure has turned out to be the most evident factor that enforces individuals to incline towards unethical activities (Johnson, 2008). Work pressure can be in the form of overload work that results in lesser time for individual to spend at home or out of organization, which creates pressure. On the other hand, work pressure exists in the form of financial pressure that involves using organizational structures and loopholes for personal advantages and success (Beenen & Pinto, 2009). Utilitarianism As earlier mentioned, many philosophers and scholars proposed their theories for explaining the notion of ethics; however, many of these theories faded in darkness but Utilitarianism (Mill,

Managment Case Study Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
Managment - Case Study Example These new values were identified by him as they were in keeping with the current competitive and changing environment to which airlines around the world were being forced to adapt if they wished to survive. This case clearly shows that even if you have the potential and capital, if work is not organized properly, the company cannot survive. This is what this company did. Motivation and redesigning work organization structure are keys to success here. Using James Hoogan as an example of effective leadership, this essay will argue that effective leadership is a combination of strategic and operational leadership values rather than a one dimensional energizing or motivational leadership. Leadership that combines the strategic and the operational is the key requirement to turning around an organisation that is in danger of going under, because there is a lot more at stake in such a company than just a workforce that is not motivated or skilled enough. There are faulty strategies that need to be identified and isolated and changed operational values that need to be put in place to fit the strategy outlined. There is no room for experimentation as in many cases the situation is a do or die one. These situations require leaders who can do a lot more than just motivating and training the workforce with new skills. Very often motivation falls in place once the workforce sees new procedures in place and becomes convinced of the changed st rategies. Research indicates that the leadership model suggested by Kenneth Blanchard is the best for effective leadership. With competition getting stronger, leadership is the key to the success or failure of any company as the many mergers, takeovers, chapter 11s, lay offs and the few hard won success stories of the corporate world will bear out. Those companies that have the right leader in the right place at the right time manage to scrape through after resorting to stringent measures and in almost all cases after bringing in a complete change in strategy and work culture, almost a revolution. Many companies even move on to be highly successful and competitive, because their changed business strategy makes them adaptable to a changed business environment. The right leadership is crucial to ensure that this transition from a floundering business to a successful one happens smoothly and successfully. The Gulf Air story is one of a successful transition which happened only because the management of the airline was pragmatic enough to appoint James Hoogan as CEO the right time; the right man at the right time. Three years after he took over the story was a completely different one, he gave Gulf Air a completely new face, quite literally because they even sported a new uniform. In considering the role of leadership in the management of a company, this paper will compare the much acclaimed Jack Welch model with the model given by the Kenneth Blanchard Company, a model that is more acceptable today. The most successful and known model of leadership n corporate literature was given by Jack Welch which he developed with the intention of revolutionizing GE and turning it into the most competitive company in America. He himself led GE for over 20 years and during that tenure he succeeded in transforming it completely. The model of leadership given by him defines a leader as one who possesses the 4 qualities

Compare and contrast Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words - 1
Compare and contrast - Assignment Example Shannon at this time is tired of leaving the traditional life and decides to America so that she can be free. Surprisingly she and Joseph escape away together with joseph disguising himself as her servant. Along the way, Shannon gets herself in trouble but Joseph comes to her rescue. They find jobs in a chicken processing plant and Joseph starts boxing making him somewhat a celebrity in the Irish town. Things however start going sour for the both of them and Shannon is even shot. Shannonââ¬â¢s father comes in search of her daughter and tries to separate them but in vain. In the end Joseph and Shannon, profess their love and go ahead to take away the land they had acquired together (Fandango 2013). Comparing and Contrasting When comparing the two main characters in this film: Joseph and Shannon, it is easy to see quite a number of similarities. For one both characters are extremely strong and hardheaded. Josephââ¬â¢s strong character comes from his determination to avenge the de ath of his father. For this, he is capable of doing anything, even murder. He does not even hide the intentions he has such that his home village is supportive of his mission and cheerfully bid him farewell. Shannon on the other hand is similarly a strong, rebellious and headstrong. This character is brought out by the fact that she wants to be free of the traditional life at her home and wants to go and explore the world. She does not like being the perfect and well-mannered daughter her parents and the society wants her to be. Her strong character is evident by the way she shoots at Joseph when he invades their home trying to kill her father Daniel. Both Joseph and Shannon are strong enough to survive a hard life in Boston. Shannon tries to dance in order to get money while Joseph becomes a ring boxer to also make money. The owners of the home they had invaded shoot Shannon but Joseph attends to her until she gains her strength back. This shows that both characters faced their cha llenges head on despite of how cornered they were. While contrasting both characters it is easy to see that Joseph and Shannon are still different in their own way. For instance, once Shannon has set her mind to do something nothing can deter her and she is not easily swayed by anything. Conversely, from the film one can see that Joseph does not stick to what she has originally planned. One instance is when Joseph decides to seek revenge on the person who murdered his father but after he seeââ¬â¢s Shannon, he is mesmerized by her strong character and somehow forgets his mission. In addition, while in Boston both Joseph and Shannon decide to work in order to acquire a piece of land but when Joseph is paid, he uses his money on expensive clothes so as to get Shannonââ¬â¢s admiration (Ebert 1992). This however does not sit well with Shannon who cannot believe Joseph is wasting the money on other things instead of saving for their daily upkeep. Shannon is a very goal oriented pers on and anyone who tries to mess around with her plans of being independent is not very welcome. Another aspect that can be contrasted is the setting of Shannonââ¬â¢s home and where she escapes to in search of a modern and free life. From the film, it is evident that despite Shannon calling home traditional and wanting to be free, while there she was well taken care of by her parents who were wealthy. This is unlike Oklahoma where on the

Coco Fusco Cultural Commentary Essay Example for Free
Coco Fusco Cultural Commentary Essay This performance was intended to mock Western concepts of the exotic but instead took on a different facade when most audiences did not realize it was a performance piece. Their cage became ââ¬Å"a metaphor for [their] condition, linking the racism implicit in the ethnographic paradigms of discoveryâ⬠[1]. Reactions and commentary received throughout a span of two years allowed Coco Fusco to gage an even stronger sense of ââ¬Å"othernessâ⬠where she was looked upon as a specimen instead of a human being. Being dehumanized in such a form cannot be easy to handle even when taking into account the fictional situation she and Gomez-Pena were in. However, the prevalent ââ¬Å"othernessâ⬠for Coco Fusco wasnââ¬â¢t exclusive to the performance piece; as a Cuban-American she had already encountered that denial of oneââ¬â¢s actual presence within society. As a young child her family hid the reasons for and meaning of comments/looks made as a way of protecting her from the harsh realities. Even in later years when Coco Fusco returned from her study abroad trip to Paris, her family was exuberant by the thought of her speaking French. She anecdotes thinking that her ââ¬Å"newly acquired French impressed everyone much more than [her] English ever hadâ⬠[2]. This inadvertently established that languages of the Western world were superior to her vernacular Spanish. The implication was that if she relinquished the use of Spanish or even the hybrid Spanglish she would be more successful in life. In a reading covered by Professor Alba-Salas the author reaffirms this notion by saying that ââ¬Å"those who achieve success have done so within social and educational systems that favor the use of English over Spanishâ⬠[3]. Coco Fuscoââ¬â¢s family was consumed by the same fear most immigrant families have; the fear of being marginalized as the ââ¬Å"otherâ⬠and never really reaching the viable potential one can have. Soon after Coco Fusco comes to realize the immense ââ¬Å"culture clashâ⬠she had been living. She realizes the implications of those stares and the thoughts brought upon by her speech. It is then when she takes in upon herself to at least attempt to dispel or even clarify the misconceptions of the population through her performances. In the Two Undiscovered Amerindians performance it is clearly seen how two conflicting cultures create animosity where the privileged, in this case the audience, attempt set the standard for the normative. Coco Fusco notes that as she and Gomez-Pena assume their ââ¬Å"stereotypical role of domesticated savage[s] and many audience members [feel] entitled to assume the role of the colonizerâ⬠[4] where as to continue the already rampant cycle of discrimination. After a particular performance one young woman came back to share her discontent, claiming that Gomez-Pena was ââ¬Å"ungrateful for all the benefits he had received thanks to multiculturalismâ⬠¦ Gomez-Pena responded that multiculturalism was not a gift from the white but a result of decades of struggle by people of colorâ⬠[5]. In this discourse Gomez-Pena reinforces the idea of this ââ¬Å"culture clashâ⬠in America and how the privileged still see themselves as that standard that enables them to pass judgment. Nevertheless both ââ¬Å"culture clashâ⬠and this sense of ââ¬Å"othernessâ⬠within communities creates a harmful effect in society but equally harmful is the alienation that appears as an outcome of their presence. The other tends to feel this alienation most when realizing there is disengagement between them and their society, work, and even at times themselves.

The Influence Of Personal Experiences In Emily Dickinsons Poetry Essay
The Influence of Personal Experiences In Emily Dickinson's Poetry à à à à à None of Emily Dickinson's readers has met the woman who lived and died in Amherst, Massachusetts more than a century ago, yet most of those same readers feel as if they know her closely. Her reclusive life made understanding her quite difficult. However, taking a close look at her verses, one can learn a great deal about this remarkable woman. The poetry of Emily Dickinson delves deep into her mind, exposing her personal experiences and their influence on her thoughts about religion, love, and death. By examining her life some, and reading her poetry in a certain light, one can see an obvious autobiographical connection. à à à à à All the beliefs and emotions Emily Dickinson wrote about were based, in one way or another, on the same aspect of her upbringing, which was religion. During her childhood, life in Amherst was based strongly upon religion and Puritan values. The distinctive Puritan virtues of simplicity, austerity, hard work, and denial of flesh, were ever-present disciplines in Emily's life (Sewall 22). Despite her stubborn denials to be labeled, she was very much of a ââ¬Å"New Englanderâ⬠. Cynthia Griffen Wolff, author of Emily Dickinson, points out that Emily ââ¬Å"knew every line of the Bible intimately, quoted from it extensively, and referred to it many more times than she referred to any other work... yet in this regard she was not unusual by Amherst's standardsâ⬠(72). The most prominent figure of religious virtues in her life was her father, Edward Dickinson. Reading the Bible to his children and speaking in town of religious ethics were daily events in his life. At home, he tried to raise his children in the rigorous religion of their ancestors, however his methods appeared quite harsh. People who knew the Dickinsons referred to Edward as a ââ¬Å"severe, latter- day Puritan, a power-minded tyrant...â⬠, and his home was often depicted as a ââ¬Å" gloomy prisonâ⬠(Sewall 8). In fact, Emily's fear and awe of him seemed to dominate her life. Although he read aloud from his Bible, conducted prayer service in his home daily, and he educated his children in a strict Puritan way, he himself was not quite a believer. He delayed conversion until well into middle age, ââ¬Å"...displayed no mark of singular devotion, defined his vocation in terms of business, an... ...ath - distancing it, coming to terms with it, and finding no fear in itâ⬠(Sewall 665). à à à à à The personal experiences of Emily Dickinson had a great influence on her poetry. Through her verses we can understand and relate to her much more easily. Without them, her withdrawal from society would have kept her unknown. Once she wrote: à à à à à à à à à à This is my letter to the World à à à à à à à à à à That never wrote to Me - à à à à à à à à à à The simple News that Nature told - à à à à à à à à à à With tender Majesty à à à à à à à à à à Her Message is committed à à à à à à à à à à To Hands I cannot see - à à à à à à à à à à For love of Her - Sweet - countrymen - à à à à à à à à à à Judge tenderly - of Me It seems fairly obvious that Emily Dickinson knew that someday her poems would be found and would be used as a window into her thoughts.

Child Prostitution and Pornography :: Exploratory Essays Research Papers
Child Prostitution and Pornography Sexual abuse of children has become a public concern only recently in the United States, young girls and boys have been used to satisfy adult sexual desires for most of our history. Castration of boys, fondling, forced genital or anal intercourse, and sale for prostitution were common through much of Western history. "It was not until the sixteenth century that laws were enacted in England to protect girls and boys under the age of ten from rape and sodomy." (Knudsen,106) p In the nineteenth century, after the exposure of the "white slave" trade, in which young girls were sold or kidnapped and forced into prostitution, the concept of "age of consent" developed in England, defining the age at which a girl could consent to sexual intercourse initially at ten, then at twelve, and finally, in 1885, at sixteen."(Knudson,106) Over the past ten years , the availability of literature on sexual assault has increased significantly. However, clinical data are increasingly suggesting that boys m ay be at equal risk for sexual victimization, since they are the preffered targets of habitual pedophiles and victims of child sex rings. Law inforcement investigations have verified the pedophiles almost always collect child pornography or child erotica. Pedophiles do not merely view pornography: They save it. It represents their most cherished sexual fantasies. They typically collect books, magazines, articles, newspapers, negatives, movies, slides, photographs, albums, drawings, audiotapes, personal letters, video tapes and equipment, diaries, clothing, sexual aids, souvenirs, toys, games, lists, paintings, ledgers, and photographic equipment. Ã ¾Better educated and more affluent pedophiles tend to have largewr collections. Pedophiles whose living or working arrangements give them a higher degree of privacy tend to have larger collections. Because collections are accumulated over a period of time, older pedophiles tend to have larger collections. Pedophiles with the economic means are converting more and more to videotape systems. They are even converting their books, magazines, photographs, and movies to videotape . For less than $1,500, a pedophile can have his own video camera and two video recorders, which give him the capability to produce and duplicate child pornography and erotica with little fear of discovery.Ã ¾(Lanning,236-7) There are four kinds of collectors: (a) closet, (b) isolated, (c) cottage, and (d) commercial. Ã ¾The closet collector keeps his collection a secret and is not actively involved in molesting children. Materials are usually purchased discreetly through commercial channels.
